A Guide to Growing Avocado from Pit

Updated: Jun 8

Are you an avocado lover? Growing avocados from pits is not only a rewarding experience but also a fun project. Follow these simple steps to turn a store-bought avocado pit into a thriving avocado plant.

  1. Remove the Pit: Start by carefully removing the pit from a ripe avocado. Handle it gently to avoid damaging the seed inside.

  2. Cleanse the Avocado: Give the pit a gentle rinse under lukewarm water to remove any remaining avocado flesh. Avoid using soap or any chemicals, as these can harm the seed.

  3. Soak the Avocado: Place the cleaned avocado pit in a bowl or jar filled with lukewarm water. Ensure that the water covers the entire pit. Let it soak for about 24 hours to soften the outer shell, making it easier to remove.

  4. Remove the Brown Outer Layer: After soaking, you'll notice that the outer layer of the pit has softened. Gently peel off this brown layer using your fingers. It should come off easily, revealing the smooth seed inside.

  5. Cover in Damp Paper Towel: Take a damp paper towel and wrap it around the avocado pit. Make sure the paper towel is moist but not dripping wet. Place the wrapped pit in a ziplock bag to maintain moisture.

  6. Place in Warm Area: Find a warm spot in your home away from direct sunlight to place the wrapped avocado pit. A temperature between 70-80°F (21-27°C) is ideal for germination. A windowsill or near a heat source works well, just avoid placing it on top of a heater.

  7. Wait for Roots to Form: Patience is key now. Leave the avocado pit undisturbed for a few weeks, checking periodically to ensure the paper towel remains damp. Soon enough, you'll start to see roots emerging from the bottom of the pit.

  8. Plant in Soil: Once the roots are about 2-3 inches long, it's time to plant the avocado pit in soil. Choose a pot with well-draining soil and plant the pit with the root end down and the pointed end up. Leave the top half of the pit exposed above the soil.

  9. Provide Proper Care: Place the potted avocado in a sunny location where it can receive plenty of sunlight. Water it regularly, ensuring that the soil remains evenly moist but not waterlogged. Avocado plants thrive in warmth and sunlight, so make sure to give them plenty of both.

  10. Monitor Growth: Keep an eye on your avocado plant as it grows. If it outgrows its pot, consider transplanting it to a larger one to accommodate its roots. Continue to provide proper care, including regular watering and occasional fertilization, to encourage healthy growth.

  11. Share the Joy: Once your avocado plant is well-established, share the joy of gardening with friends and fellow plant enthusiasts. You can gift, donate, or even trade plants to spread the green love.

Happy Growing !
