"Winter Wonderland Gardening: Growing All Year in the Snow!"

Updated: Mar 10

Using season extension techniques like cloches, high tunnels, greenhouses, cold frames, frost protection blankets, or plastic covers can indeed help you extend your growing season and cultivate plants throughout the year. Here are some tips for each method:

  1. Cloches: These are small, transparent covers placed over individual plants to protect them from cold weather. You can use glass, plastic, or even inverted plastic bottles. They trap heat and protect plants from frost. Remember to vent them on warm days to prevent overheating.

  2. Cold Frames: These are like miniature greenhouses, usually made with a transparent cover (glass or plastic) on a frame that's placed over plants in the ground. They absorb heat during the day and keep plants warm at night. Ensure proper ventilation to prevent overheating.

  3. Frost Protection Blankets or Row Covers: These are lightweight fabrics that can be draped over plants or used to cover rows. They provide a few degrees of frost protection while allowing sunlight, air, and water to reach the plants. They are great for protecting sensitive plants during light frosts.

  4. Greenhouses: These structures offer a controlled environment for plants. They can be made from glass, polycarbonate, or polyethylene plastic. With proper insulation and temperature control, you can grow a wide variety of plants year-round. Consider using fans, heaters, or natural ventilation to regulate temperature and humidity.

  5. High Tunnels: Similar to greenhouses but typically less permanent and with a curved frame covered in plastic. They offer protection and can extend the growing season, allowing for earlier planting in spring and later harvests in fall.

For successful year-round growing using these methods, keep these general tips in mind:

  • Temperature Monitoring: Use thermometers to monitor temperature changes within your covered spaces. Optimal temperatures vary for different plants.

  • Ventilation: Adequate airflow is essential to prevent overheating, especially in greenhouses and high tunnels. Adjustable vents or windows can help regulate temperature and humidity.

  • Watering and Irrigation: Even during colder months, plants need proper hydration. Be mindful of watering schedules and ensure adequate moisture levels.

  • Crop Selection: Choose crops that are suitable for the conditions you can provide. Some vegetables and herbs are more cold-hardy or better suited to extended growing seasons than others.

  • Soil Health: Maintain good soil health by regularly adding compost or organic matter to replenish nutrients and improve soil structure.

  • Protection from Pests: While these covers offer protection from weather elements, pests can still be an issue. Regularly check for pests and take necessary preventive measures.

By combining these techniques and paying attention to the specific needs of your plants, you can extend your growing season and enjoy fresh produce throughout the year.
